During the call, Xi Jinping stated that the building of a community with a shared future between China and Brazil, and the alignment of both countries’ development strategies, have made positive strides in recent years.
The Chinese president emphasized that, in the face of new international challenges, the two nations—as key members of the Global South—must play a more constructive role in reforming and improving the global governance system and in upholding international equity and justice.
He also called for fostering high-quality development in expanded BRICS cooperation, preserving the mechanism’s unity, and generating new outcomes that benefit developing countries. Xi reiterated China’s support for the defense of Brazil’s sovereignty and independence and acknowledged the country’s contribution to regional and global peace and stability.
For his part, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva affirmed that the community with a shared future for a fairer world and a more sustainable planet has made positive progress, and he highlighted the growth of bilateral cooperation as well as the record levels of trade achieved between the two countries.
The call follows the US government’s imposition of new tariffs on products from 60 economies (including China and Latin American nations) citing forced labor concerns.
