The operation on a 19-year-old man—who was brain-dead following a severe traffic accident—was carried out with the family’s consent, the Vietnam News Agency announced.
Bai Chay Hospital, the National Coordinating Center for Human Organ Transplantation, and several major referral hospitals in the country prepared the conditions for the retrieval of the heart, liver, and both kidneys; the lungs were not retrieved as they did not meet the necessary criteria.
In accordance with the national organ distribution plan, the heart and the right lobe of the liver were transported to the 108 Military Central Hospital in Hanoi, where both transplants were successfully completed early Sunday morning; the recipients are recovering with stable vital signs.
Meanwhile, the left lobe of the liver was sent to Vinmec Times City Hospital, where—in coordination with the National Children’s Hospital—it was successfully transplanted into a 10-month-old infant suffering from congenital biliary atresia and severe liver failure.
One of the kidneys was transported over 600 kilometers to Hue Central Hospital, where it was successfully implanted yesterday afternoon.
The other kidney was transplanted at Children’s Hospital 2 in Ho Chi Minh City; the organ showed adequate perfusion and began producing urine immediately during the surgery.
Bai Chay Hospital became the third center in Quang Ninh province to successfully master the multi-organ transplant technique, following the Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital and Quang Ninh General Hospital.
