Ascari, a member of the Five Star Movement (M5S), addressed the dire situation facing the island—a consequence of the criminal U.S. economic, commercial, and financial blockade—in statements published on the website of the newspaper *Il Sole 24 Ore*.
These genocidal measures, maintained by U.S. governments against the nation for over 60 years, were intensified by the Donald Trump administration in an attempt to turn the island into what he termed a “silent Gaza,” drawing a parallel to the destruction and death inflicted by Israel upon the Palestinian population.
The MP criticized Italy’s “shameful” abstention during the vote held at the United Nations General Assembly on July 7 regarding a debate on the escalation of unilateral measures and the threat of aggression by the current U.S. administration against the Caribbean nation.
On June 12, Ascari had expressed dissatisfaction with this official stance, noting at the time that “attempts are being made to break the Cuban people through coercive measures that affect the poorest, the most vulnerable, children, and the sick.”
This represents “a textbook case of economic violence—of the law of the strongest—directly and tragically impacting the fundamental rights of the civilian population,” she asserted, describing it as an expression of “the logic of imperialism, which punishes those who rebel against the domination of the powerful, and the arrogance of those who believe themselves to be masters of the world.”
“The imperialists try to block everything, but there is something they cannot block: the pride of a people that refuses to be subdued and does not sell its sovereignty,” noted Italian lawmaker Stefania Ascari.
