Constitutional reform seeks to strengthen peace, says Daniel Ortega

Managua, Aug 1 (Prensa Latina) Nicaraguan Co-President Daniel Ortega stated that the constitutional reform—currently undergoing a national consultation process—aims to strengthen peace and ensure that electoral processes serve national interests.

Speaking at an event marking the 47th anniversary of the Nicaraguan Air Force and Air Defense, the leader affirmed that the country would continue to defend peace as an indispensable condition for economic development, investment growth, and family well-being.

“Nicaragua does not want war; Nicaragua wants peace, and we will continue fighting for peace,” Ortega declared in the presence of Co-President Rosario Murillo, the military high command, and guests at the ceremony.

The leader noted that the National Assembly is working on constitutional reforms to ensure that elections are conducted with full national sovereignty and free from external interference—such as the U.S. military interventions in Nicaragua that occurred in the past.

Therefore, “We’re working on constitutional reforms so that elections in Nicaragua can be held with sovereignty,” Ortega stated.

He reiterated that his government would prioritize the defense of peace and sent a message to the United States regarding Managua’s position. “The U.S. government must be clear on this: Nicaragua does not want war; it wants peace, and we will continue fighting for peace,” he concluded.
