Ecuador: Demands for access to information on enforced disappearances

Quito, August 1 (Prensa Latina) Human rights defenders and relatives of missing persons have demanded that the Ecuadorian State release military documents they consider crucial for advancing investigations into enforced disappearances.

The demand was raised during a session of the Talks Table on Enforced Disappearances with the National Government—held in Guayaquil given the documents’ importance to investigations into the events and those responsible.

Representatives from the Permanent Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (CDH) and the Committee of Relatives for the Truth and Justice of Our Missing Persons staged a symbolic protest at the venue.

During the meeting, they recalled that the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) had requested—via a resolution issued on December 24, 2025—that the Ecuadorian State provide information regarding the apprehension and subsequent disappearance of individuals during 2024.

However, they stated that the Ministry of Defense has yet to release the required data, despite having committed to doing so during a working meeting held on June 5 with State representatives, the petitioners, and the IACHR itself.

Furthermore, they noted that the ministry has neither participated in the two convened sessions of the Talks Table on Enforced Disappearances—established by the Ministry of Government’s Undersecretariat for Human Rights to coordinate compliance with precautionary measures—nor appointed delegates to the forum.

In the view of the CDH and the Committee of Relatives, the failure to provide the documentation and the Ministry of Defense’s absence demonstrate an institutional refusal to cooperate in clarifying the facts and investigating the alleged enforced disappearances.
