Mexico reaffirms support for Cuba and commitment to send material aid

Mexico City, Jul 31 (Prensa Latina) Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reaffirmed her support for Cuba and the continued delivery of material aid to the island, amidst the tightening of the economic and energy blockade imposed by the United States.

“Mexico’s support for Cuba has been historic and will continue to be so. It is a matter of sovereignty and humanitarian aid, and we will always continue to do it,” the president said in response to a question regarding recent comments by U.S. Congressman Carlos Gimenez.

The Republican criticized Sheinbaum’s government for “undermining” U.S. policy toward the Caribbean nation—a policy labeled as criminal and described as collective punishment by politicians, unions, parties, and social organizations in Mexico and other nations around the world.

The lack of access to fuel, resulting from U.S. measures, affects critical areas such as electricity generation, hospital operations, food production and distribution, and water pumping on the island.

Compounding this is Washington’s persistent effort to target any source of financing the largest of the Antilles might secure, as well as the use of decrees and secondary sanctions to impose restrictions on entities vital to the economy.

She asserted that this stance has been maintained over time, regardless of changes in government, “because it is a constitutional position.”

The president announced that more aid for Cuba would be sent soon.

“The sovereignty of peoples and the support we can continue to provide to the people of Cuba,” she stated in response to a question about the march in support of the island held on Sunday in the capital, which drew thousands of people.
