To begin with, the PPD consistently chooses to ignore the fact that the PIP has undergone the strictest audits, with no adverse findings or issues raised in the reports submitted to the Electoral Comptroller.
PPD Secretary General Manuel Calderon Cerame alleged that the pro-independence organization—which displaced the PPD from second place in the last elections—receives unreported funds.
Pro-independence senators Maria de Lourdes Santiago and Adrian Gonzalez Costa noted that the Law for the Oversight of Political Campaign Financing classifies any contribution of $50 or less as an “anonymous donation.”
In this regard, they pointed out that while smaller contributions made via direct debit or credit card are categorized as anonymous, they are itemized individually in reports to the Comptroller, including each donor’s name and details.
“In this way, the PIP raises nearly $6,500 per month. These contributions add up to an annual total of $78,000—funds the PPD falsely claims are ‘anonymous and in cash,’ when in fact they are neither,” the PIP lawmakers stated.
Regarding radiothons—events to which the press is always invited and has witnessed firsthand—local committees turn over funds raised through public collections in town squares, on public streets, and at traffic lights; these funds are gathered by our members through great effort and patriotism.
