Colombian President Met with Medical Students in Cuba

Havana, Aug 2 (Prensa Latina) Before leaving Havana, Colombian President Gustavo Petro met with young Colombians studying at the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) as part of his official visit to Cuba.

According to the Cuban Foreign Ministry, the island reaffirmed its commitment to the training of these students—part of the Peace Agreements signed in Havana in 2016—and assured that it would honor its commitments under any circumstances.

During official talks, Presidents Miguel Díaz-Canel and Gustavo Petro reaffirmed the historic bond of brotherhood between the two countries and peoples, based on mutual respect, cooperation, and solidarity.

Diaz-Canel acknowledged Petro’s efforts to strengthen bilateral relations—which have seen significant progress in the economic-commercial and cooperation spheres—and reaffirmed Cuba’s commitment to the pursuit of peace through a negotiated political solution to the internal armed conflict in Colombia.

Cuba expressed its gratitude to Colombia for condemning the U.S. blockade, Washington’s inclusion of the island on its unilateral list of countries allegedly sponsoring terrorism, and the energy-related restrictions imposed by the United States.

Petro’s visit—his third to Cuba as Head of State—took place after Colombian President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella announced the closure of the embassy in Havana and the severing of ties with the island.
