National Assembly (Parliament) President Gustavo Porras made the remark at the multi-state TeleSUR program “El Mapa,” after noting that the initiative responds to the need to consolidate a legal framework that guarantees sovereignty and preserves the model of the People’s Presidency.
Porras stated that Nicaragua’s history has been marked by foreign interventions, from William Walker’s filibuster invasion in 1856 to the US military occupation in the 20th century, and asserted that these records justify the strengthening of the constitutional order.
The Parliament president explained that the proposed reform is undergoing extensive consultations with different sectors of the country and includes several key areas designed to reinforce institutions and political stability.
Among the provisions were those designed to prevent the electoral participation of individuals who, according to the initiative, have promoted coups d’etat, attacked independence, sovereignty, national self-determination, or violated the fundamental principles of the Constitution.
He affirmed that the reform does not eliminate electoral processes, but rather seeks to guarantee that they continue to be carried out with electoral oversight and under regulations that safeguard national interests.
