DRC government to pay reparations to genocide survivors

Kinshasa, Aug 3 (Prensa Latina) Felix Tshisekedi, President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), announced the opening of the National GENOCOST Museum and affirmed that the government will pay, as of next fiscal year, the reparations owed to survivors.

The Presidency informed that Tshisekedi, accompanied by other government officials, attended a ceremony commemorating the National Day of Commemoration of the Genocide for Economic Gain (GENOCOST), held at the memorial dedicated to this event in Kinshasa.

During the ceremony, where several survivors shared their testimonies, the president reaffirmed that “no life can be reduced to a mere number” and asserted that August 2 “is not a call to hatred nor an invitation to revenge,” but rather a space for reflection and dignity to honor the memory of the victims.

To consolidate this long-term struggle, the head of State ordered the establishment of the National GENOCOST Museum, a state-of-the-art scientific complex designed to centralize archives and transmit this history to new generations.

Tshisekedi denounced what he called Rwandan aggression, shielded by the Congo River Alliance-the March 23 Movement (AFC/M23), in eastern DRC, and decried “this murderous enterprise, founded on a logic of conquest and plunder.”
