Chile plans to create agency to liquidate assets of organized crime

Santiago, Chile, Aug 4 (Prensa Latina) The Chilean government is considering submitting a bill to the National Congress to create an agency to manage and liquidate assets seized from organized crime, allocating those resources to other institutions.

The goal is for the seized assets to strengthen the operational capabilities of law enforcement agencies tasked with combating these gangs and to provide reparations to victims of crime.

Although all details are not yet known, the initiative can find support within Parliament, given the need to address the growing climate of insecurity in the country.

However, some opposition legislators consider the measure insufficient if progress is not made in lifting bank secrecy to allow for tracing the money trail.

Senator Juan Luis Castro, of the Partido Socialista (Socialist Party-PS), noted that if the goal is to target the assets of organized crime, then access to the accounts and fortunes that sustain these criminal structures must also be facilitated.
