Cuba denounces SEN failures as consequence of the blockade

Havana, Aug 4 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez denounced that the disconnections of the National Electric System (SEN) are direct consequences of the genocidal blockade imposed by the United States, particularly the energy blockade.

On his X account, the Foreign Minister condemned the fact that the energy blockade not only prevents the free import of fuel but also blocks the entry of necessary parts and components for the SEN, hinders collaboration with experts from other nations, and impedes access to international financing.

The island’s Electric Union (UNE) reported that the SEN was restored at 11:35 a.m. (local time) this Tuesday, following a disconnection on the afternoon of August 3—which occurred after gradual progress had been made in reconnecting the system after a failure the previous day.

The UNE detailed that the new failure occurred during the restoration process due to weather events, which affected the grid and had a “direct impact on the generating units that were online.”

Similar incidents involving the SEN occurred three times in July, and on August 1, the system suffered a partial blackout, leaving several provinces in western and central Cuba—including Havana—practically without electricity.

So far in 2026, the SEN has recorded six nationwide disconnections, according to reports from the Electric Union, each requiring between five and eight hours to achieve the progressive interconnection of the provinces.

These failures negatively impact not only families but also businesses and all sectors of the Cuban economy.

Official data show that the interruptions have required the implementation of restoration protocols prioritizing hospitals, pumping systems, and essential services, while work continues to bring the remaining circuits back online.

Cuban Minister of Energy and Mines Vicente de la O Levy recently ruled out operational failures as the cause of outages in the National Electric System (SEN), attributing them instead to the conditions the power grid currently faces as a result of the intensified U.S. blockade.
