Abelardo de la Espriella to be sworn in as President of Colombia

Cali, Colombia, Aug 7 (Prensa Latina) Colombia's President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella will be sworn in amid tight security and calls from progressive sectors for demonstrations in opposition.

The swearing-in ceremony, attended by Congress and international delegations, will take place in the USC Arena, located at the University of Santiago de Cali, with capacity for approximately 2,500 people.

The presidents of Argentina, Javier Milei; Chile, Jose Antonio Kast; Ecuador, Daniel Noboa; Panama, Jose Raul Mulino; Paraguay, Santiago Pena; Honduras, Nasry Asfura; and the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, will attend the ceremony.

King Felipe VI of Spain and a US delegation headed by Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche will also be present.

The inauguration, however, will also be marked by notable absences, among them former Colombian presidents Ernesto Samper (1994-1998) and Juan Manuel Santos (2010-2018), who did not receive invitations.

The Pacto Historico (Historical Pact-PH) alliance, which will become an opposition party in Congress starting this Friday, announced it would not attend the inauguration and instead would participate alongside citizens in rallies in Cali, Barranquilla, and Bogota.

It is expected that during this day, De la Espriella will be sworn in, receive the presidential sash from Senate President Honorio Henriquez, and address the guests gathered at the Santiago de Cali University.
