According to the political group, the scheme aims to link the leaders to alleged drug trafficking activities; they described this move as a “threat to democracy.”
“If these facts are confirmed, Colombia would be facing a new episode of political persecution through the misuse of the justice system (*lawfare*)—a practice incompatible with the social rule of law and the guarantees inherent to a democracy,” the group warned.
Consequently, the *Pacto* demanded that the Attorney General’s Office act with absolute transparency and independence, respond in a timely manner to the request filed by Senator Iván Cepeda, and ensure that no investigation is used for purposes of political persecution.
“We call upon Colombian society, oversight bodies, human rights organizations, and the international community to remain vigilant against any attempt to weaponize the justice system against opposition leaders,” the party urged.
It also categorically rejected judicial frame-ups, stigmatization, and any form of political persecution.
“We will defend—by all constitutional and democratic means—the right to opposition, due process, and democracy. The justice system cannot become an instrument of political persecution,” the statement emphasized.
Earlier, former presidential candidate and future opposition leader in the Senate, Ivan Cepeda, revealed that he possesses evidence of what he termed a “judicial entrapment scheme” targeting both himself and President Petro.
