In a message posted on the social network X, the leader expressed his appreciation for the Cuban delegation’s performance at the regional multi-sport event.
“Amidst the complexities we are living through, we remain grateful for the performance of our athletes at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo,” he wrote.
Diaz-Canel highlighted the three gold medals won by Cuban track and field athletes, noting the victory of Leyanis Perez in the triple jump, Anisleidis Ochoa’s win in the 5,000 meters, and the title claimed by young Jorge Hodelin in the long jump.
He also praised the performance of the Cuban wrestlers, who, he stated, handled each of their bouts with authority during the competition.
The head of state also highlighted the performance of the men’s and women’s hockey teams, particularly the defensive solidity of the women’s squad and the performance of their goalkeeper, who saved four penalty shots in the final.
“The grit and defensive solidity of the men’s and women’s hockey teams… are part of the story Cuba is writing in Santo Domingo—a story of courage and persistence,” he noted.
The president concluded his message by congratulating all the Cuban athletes who made it to the podium at the regional games.
