Leo XIV attended the 2026 Franciscan Youth Gathering

Vatican City, Aug 6 (Prensa Latina) Pope Leo XIV visited the city of Assisi, in the central Italian region of Umbria, where he participated in the final day of the 2026 Franciscan Youth Gathering.   The Holy Father, who presided over a Mass with the gathering's participants, answered questions during a dialogue with the crowd that could not fit inside the basilica due to capacity limits.

In his homily, the Pope regretted that “technology makes us unaccustomed to being together, to bearing witness to fraternity,” and asserted that “making a definitive decision is perhaps the most revolutionary act.”

The Bishop of Rome referred to “the sometimes confusing interpretation of freedom,” which can create the illusion that “problems are solved by running away, betraying others, or trying to take a few steps along ever-changing paths without ever getting very far.”

The Pontiff warned that, frequently, “the multiplication of experiences, contacts, and consumption corresponds to an inner emptiness that can even lead to using people as if they were merchandise.”

He regretted that “every era faces the risk of building an inhumane and more unjust world,” noting that “at the beginning of my first encyclical, I suggested that every generation inherits the task of shaping its own time.”

In this regard, the challenge lies in “developing history as a space where the dignity of each person is safeguarded, justice is promoted, and fraternity is made possible,” he added.
