During a meeting with the National Assembly’s Special Commission in charge of the consultations, Parlacen Vice President Guillermo Daniel Ortega voiced the Nicaraguan delegation’s support for the initiative promoted by co-presidents Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.
According to the lawmaker, the constitutional transformations and adjustments are necessary to strengthen the country’s institutional framework and guarantee “transparent and reliable” electoral processes.
He also reaffirmed the delegation’s institutional and regional commitment to upholding the Political Constitution and following the directives of the Government of Nicaragua.
Ortega further ratified the resolve to continue promoting a model geared toward economic and social development, progress, and the well-being of the Nicaraguan people.
During the consultation, the delegation proposed incorporating into the constitutional reform the principle that crimes and penalties regarding treason against the homeland—as well as the instigation and execution of coup attempts—are not subject to statutes of limitation. “We propose including in the Constitutional Reforms a provision allowing the Supreme Electoral Council, on its own initiative, to refer cases for appropriate processing regarding individuals who attempt to evade compliance with the Political Constitution and the Electoral Law,” Ortega stated.
For his part, the President of the National Assembly and coordinator of the Special Commission, Gustavo Porras, reiterated that the reform maintains the holding of electoral processes and assured that all Nicaraguans would be able to run as candidates, with the exception of those deemed traitors to the homeland.
