Restoration of relations with Mexico welcomed in Peru

Lima, Aug 7 (Prensa Latina) The restoration of relations between Peru and Mexico has been met with widespread satisfaction following an eight-month rupture caused by a dispute over the asylum granted by Mexico to former Prime Minister Betssy Chavez.

Radio and television stations gave the news prominent coverage, airing statements on the matter from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and local Foreign Minister Carlos Espa.

Senator Nora Bonifaz, of the centrist Good Government Party, stated that the restoration—which followed the Peruvian government’s decision to allow Chavez to travel to Mexico under asylum—confirmed the necessity of this outcome, which should have happened long ago.

Congresswoman Catherin Palomino noted that the safe-conduct pass was always a requirement of the rule of law, and that “its arbitrary denial harmed our good relations with our sister nation of Mexico and constituted a failure to meet our international obligations.”

Chavez’s lawyer, Raul Noblecilla, remarked that it should not have taken so long to grant travel authorization; he welcomed the fact that the asylum recipient “is now in Mexico, protected by a sovereign state against those who want to see her captured and abducted—treated like a political trophy.”

Labor Minister Juan Manuel Sheput stated that with Chavez’s trip to Mexico, Peru “honors its commitment to the Caracas Convention (on asylum) and demonstrates through its actions respect for the institution of asylum, as well as the fact that there are no political persecutees in the country,” thereby enabling the restoration of relations.

Progressive Senator Percy Osorio expressed the view that the most important aspect of all is the restoration of relations with Mexico, a sister nation.
