Brazil: Protests in cities demand an end to 6×1 work schedule

Brasilia, Aug 10 (Prensa Latina) Labor unions and popular movements are staging protests in several Brazilian cities to demand an end to the 6x1 work schedule and a reduction in the workday without pay reduction.

These actions, convened by the Central Workers’ Union (CUT) and other labor and popular organizations, coincide with the return of lawmakers and senators to their deliberative activities after the National Congress took a recess.

The organizers plan public events, leaflet distribution, conversations with workers at bus, train, and subway terminals, as well as other initiatives to pressure the Senate to move forward with the proposal.

The maximum constitutional workweek is currently 44 hours, and the so-called 6×1 work schedule establishes six days of work followed by one day of rest. Its elimination is one of the leading demands of the Brazilian labor movement.

The Chamber of Deputies approved, on May 27, in two rounds and by a wide majority, the Constitutional Amendment Proposal (PEC 221/2019), which establishes 40 hours distributed over five working days and two days of paid rest, without wage reduction.
