The official stated that damage assessments are underway to prepare the first official report on the quake, which occurred at a depth of 96 kilometers at 7:34 a.m. local time, with its epicenter in San Jose del Palmar in the country’s northwest.
Videos circulating on social media show collapsed buildings in both Choco and the central-western department of Caldas, though no official figures regarding the damage have been released yet.
President Abelardo de la Espriella ordered the establishment of a Unified Command Post to coordinate the response to the damage and assist those affected.
He noted on his X account that he had requested a detailed report on the situation and the most urgent needs from the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management.
The president announced that he would travel to the city of Pereira to support those affected and oversee the government’s response.
