In a message sent to Rene Gonzalez, director of the Fidel Castro Ruz Center, MIU Secretary General Miguel Mejia emphasized that the statesman’s figure transcends borders and remains relevant to the struggles for the self-determination and dignity of peoples.
“Today, as in the past, the figure of Commander Fidel Castro Ruz—on the centenary of his birth and beyond—will continue to be a driving force and a guide for all the peoples of the world capable of defending their independence and peace in sovereignty,” Mejía stated.
The Dominican leader underscored that the Cuban statesman’s legacy keeps alive the struggle for the self-determination and dignity of peoples in the face of all forms of imperialist, colonialist, and militarist oppression and aggression.
In the letter, Mejía expressed regret that the MIU was unable to participate in the 1st International Colloquium “Fidel: Legacy and Future,” scheduled in Havana from August 10 to 13 to mark the centenary of the revolutionary leader’s birth.
The MIU Secretary General highlighted the importance of the commemoration and commended the event’s organizers, while wishing success to an activity that, in his view, will serve as a political, cultural, and internationalist benchmark.
The organization also reiterated its solidarity with Cuba in the face of current pressures and acts of aggression by the United States against the island, and reaffirmed its commitment to the ideals of Jose Marti and Fidel Castro.
