Giant mirror prototype created in Russia to study the Universe

Moscow, Aug 10 (Prensa Latina) The Russian space corporation Roscosmos announced the manufacture of a ten-meter mirror prototype for the Spektr-M telescope, designed to study the deep universe.

According to the Roscosmos Telegram channel, the Reshetnev company has produced a prototype of the Spektr-M telescope’s primary mirror; engineers will use this prototype to test the deployment system for the structure’s 24 segments.

The spacecraft is designed to study deep-space objects in the infrared and millimeter-wave ranges. The telescope’s main mirror is a transformable structure that, once in orbit, forms a reflective surface 10 meters in diameter.

The device is being developed at the request of the Astro Space Center of the Lebedev Physical Institute (Russian Academy of Sciences), which is responsible for the scientific instrumentation.

Specialists are striving to achieve high precision on the reflector’s surface, ensuring the sensitivity required to receive signals from the depths of the universe.

As previously reported, Russian scientists plan to launch a new observatory, Spektr-M, into space in 2036, and have scheduled the launch of another recent telescope, Spektr-UV, for the autumn of 2031.

Meanwhile, the Russian Academy of Sciences announced that it will extend the operational life of the Spektr-RG space observatory by another five years.
