Uruguay: PIT-CNT unions join strike for third time

Montevideo, Aug 11 (Prensa Latina) Uruguay's PIT-CNT trade union called for a partial general strike in this capital and the metropolitan area, along with a march to the Legislative Palace, where the national budget is being debated as part of the government's Accountability Report.

Under the slogan “No transformations, no progress,” the unions are joining the strike this morning, although education unions have announced their protest will last 24 hours.

The drive will call for accountability and increased funding for policies that guarantee people’s rights.

It will also demand a public, solidary, efficient, and non-profit social security system.

It will also advocate for the right to live in peace, oppose the genocide in Gaza, the war in the Middle East, and reject the US blockade against Cuba.

This will be the third strike during the administration of President Yamandu Orsi.

The protest will take place despite a recent meeting between Orsi and leaders of the PIT-CNT labor union, headed by its president, Marcelo Abdala.
