The government will address the critical shortage of this vital resource with key water officials, a consequence of the intense drought and the passage of at least four heat waves across mainland France. “While France is experiencing a particularly severe drought, the effects of climate change are exacerbating the strain on water resources,” a statement from the Ministry for Ecological Transition emphasized.
“Nearly 70% of French territory is subject to water restrictions,” admitted the aforementioned agency, as reported by the television channel France 24.
The government stated that on Sunday the 9th, all 99 departments of mainland France remained under surveillance, including 67 in a state of water crisis, the highest level of restrictions on the use of this precious resource.
Another 21 regions were on heightened alert, the channel reported.
Coincidentally, the day before, former Prime Minister Gabriel Attal expressed particular interest in urgently resolving the water issue and even proposed creating a ministry to address it, should he become president.
He explained that one in five liters of water is lost to leaks and advocated for a massive plan to eliminate them and recover one million liters of the precious resource by 2035, the equivalent of 400,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools, he noted.
