Ambassador to Angola says Cuba is a country of peace

Luanda, Aug 12 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Ambassador to Angola, Oscar Leon, affirmed that his nation is a country of peace, but takes very seriously the threats of military aggression issued on Wednesday by the United States.

Leon added that the island poses no danger to that country, as its leaders try to portray it, and there are no reasons to justify an attack by the world’s greatest military power; however, he assured that the Caribbean nation is preparing to defend itself, if necessary.

In a live interview on Angolan Public Television (TPA) last night, the diplomat denounced the tightening of the US blockade and the approval, by Washington, of new measures with a severe impact on the Cuban population, which can be described as genocide.

The ambassador specifically mentioned the oil import siege in place since January 29, under which only one shipment of Russian fuel has entered Cuba in seven months, causing disruptions to power generation, water supply, transportation, hospitals, schools, and all services and sectors.

The conversation analyzed the setback in relations with the United States since President Donald Trump’s first term, which saw him discard the progress made since 2015, such as the signing of 22 cooperation agreements in areas of common interest.

Leon also addressed the changes to the Cuban economic model, affirming that these are being made sovereignly and as part of the reform process initiated by the Constitution discussed and approved by the people in 2019.

Another issue discussed was the respect for human rights in Cuba. Regarding this, the ambassador affirmed that Cuban laws, beginning with the Constitution and the Family Code, extensively protect these rights, and the country respects them.

Cuba is also a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, actively participates within it, and cooperates with its mechanisms.

The diplomat analyzed the aspects of the historical relationship between the two nations, including the military cooperation from 1975 to 1991, cooperation in health and education sectors, the training of Angolan students in Cuba, the operation of the bilateral commission, and the prospects for expanding collaboration.
