Italy reaffirms support for peace negotiations in the Middle East

Rome, Aug 12 (Prensa Latina) Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani reaffirmed his country's position in favor of promoting dialogue to achieve stability and peace in the Middle East.

In an interview with the Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat, published on the Italian Foreign Ministry’s official website, Tajani emphasized, with reference to the situation in the Gaza Strip, Rome’s commitment to a political solution, for which it is promoting the two-state solution.

The Foreign Minister referred to the recent meeting held in Rome on July 28 and 29 of the Global Partnership for the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, an event held in cooperation with Saudi Arabia, which included closed-door technical discussions and an interfaith dialogue.

The meeting was co-chaired by Tajani and his Saudi counterpart, Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, and also included the participation of the Palestinian Authority’s Foreign Minister, Varsen Aghabekian, and the US Senior Advisor to the Peace Board, Aryeh Lightstone.

The minister emphasized that, in Rome’s view, “the two-state solution remains the only credible option to guarantee Israel’s security and the establishment of a free, democratic, and peaceful Palestinian state.”

Tajani also reiterated Italy’s humanitarian and institutional commitment to the Gaza Strip, where Israeli attacks have killed more than 73,000 people, including the Food for Gaza initiative and the new allocation of €10 million to the Palestinian National Authority through the United Nations.
