Uruguayan Parliament condemns barbarity against Cuba

Montevideo, Aug 12 (Prensa Latina) The blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba is an act of barbarism that threatens humanity, stated Senator Oscar Andrade of the Broad Front before the Uruguayan Parliament.

He said that this practice has been repeatedly rejected by the UN General Assembly and violates international law.

The senator, who is also the general secretary of the Communist Party of Uruguay (PCU) and who recently returned from the Caribbean island, referred to the 67,000 children under one year old who cannot access the vaccination system as a consequence of the economic, commercial, financial, and now energy embargo against the Caribbean nation.

Andrade recalled that Cuba had the lowest infant mortality rate in the Americas, a rate now negatively impacted by the US blockade, which denies Cuba medicines, medical supplies, and other necessities. In his remarks, he mentioned that the blockade also prevents the arrival in Cuba of seven thousand containers of hospital supplies and equipment for energy recovery.

He asserted that the current situation on the island violates all international regulations.

He emphasized that despite this dramatic situation, thousands of professionals graduated in Cuba during the last academic year, 735 of them from 62 countries, which he described as a gesture of humanity.

He noted that among the graduates from Cuban universities are five American doctors and 23 Palestinians.

“We cannot remain silent in the face of such barbarity,” Senator Andrade declared, requesting that his statement be sent to the US and Cuban embassies in Uruguay, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Uruguayan Anti-Imperialist Committee of Solidarity with Cuba and the Peoples of the World.

The Secretary General of the Communist Party of Uruguay (PCU) participated last weekend in Havana in the 24th Meeting of Communist and Workers’ Parties.

On that occasion, he was received by the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba and President, Miguel Diaz-Canel, who expressed his gratitude for the historic solidarity shown by Uruguay towards his country.
