Galicia Celebrates Fidel Castro’s Centenary

Lancara, Spain, Aug 13 (Prensa Latina) In Lancara—the ancestral home of Angel Castro Argiz, Fidel Castro’s father—Galicia celebrated the centenary of the birth of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution.

The gathering was attended by figures such as Efren Castro Caloto, Vice President of the Lugo Provincial Council, and Angel Garcia Seoane, Mayor of Oleiros; the keynote address was delivered by Cuba’s Ambassador to Spain, Marcelino Medina.

Medina highlighted the deep significance of commemorating the date at Angel Castro’s birthplace—now a House Museum and Interpretation Center for Galician Emigration. It was a place Fidel had long yearned to visit, finally doing so in 1992 “to appreciate the roots from which his paternal family came.”

He was reportedly struck by the home’s humble nature and by the warm, proud welcome he received from the local residents and the people of Galicia in general. There, he also witnessed firsthand the virtues he always recognized in noble Galician emigrants—qualities that, in his own words, were “kindness, hospitality, and generosity,” the diplomat noted.

He took the opportunity to honor the legacy of Galician emigration to Cuba and to acknowledge a relationship built over generations upon mutual affection, respect, and solidarity.

The Cuban ambassador also expressed his gratitude to the many individuals who helped forge increasingly strong ties with Fidel himself and his brother Raul Castro—including Carlos Lopez, honorary president of the Lancara-Cuba Association; Angel Garcia Seoane; and Lancara City Council.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he highlighted the International Event marking the centenary of the birth of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, which features an extensive program of activities in Cuba and numerous other countries, conceived as an opportunity to pay tribute to, reflect upon, and study his legacy.
