So far, no deaths have been reported from this cause. The province of Cabinda, in northern Angola, has the highest concentration of confirmed cases, with 198 from April 30 to August 11, and 274 suspected cases.
Given this situation and its status as a border province with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where the disease is endemic, Angolan Health Minister Silvia Lutucuta visited the territory to assess the response to the disease.
At the meeting with health authorities, it was announced that vaccines will soon arrive in Cabinda to continue the immunization campaigns, which will be supported by the Angolan Armed Forces and the Ministry of the Interior, Jornal de Angola reported.
It was added that a selective vaccination strategy will be implemented, primarily targeting contacts of confirmed cases and those considered at higher risk, as soon as the doses are available.
It was also stated that a national rapid response team, led by the Public Health division of the Ministry of Health, will remain in Cabinda to support epidemiological investigation, contact tracing, surveillance, and community mobilization.
Furthermore, it was specified that national authorities are maintaining contact with the DRC to strengthen cross-border surveillance and information sharing.
The Minister of Health emphasized the need to strengthen community surveillance, contact tracing and monitoring, isolation of suspected and confirmed cases, and investigation of transmission chains.
