The organization stated that the lack of a public explanation raises concerns and prompts questions regarding the true reasons behind the move.
It noted that it is particularly questionable for Dominican authorities to announce a measure of this nature without explaining to the public the causes that led to the diplomats’ expulsion.
“Invoking the Vienna Convention cannot serve as an argument for keeping a political and diplomatic decision of such significance in absolute secrecy,” stated Maria Teresa Cabrera, president of the Frente Amplio.
She argued that the historic ties of friendship, solidarity, and cooperation between the Dominican and Cuban peoples must be preserved and strengthened, regardless of any differences that may exist between the governments.
“The Dominican Republic should not take decisions that unnecessarily damage its ties with Cuba or contribute to deepening political tensions in the Caribbean,” Cabrera asserted.
She described the decision by President Luis Abinader’s government as “shameful” and insisted that the executive branch has a responsibility to act with “transparency.”
“Diplomatic discretion cannot be used to hide from the public the fundamental reasons for a decision that impacts the country’s foreign policy,” she insisted.
The Frente Amplio further warned that Dominican foreign policy must serve the national interest, the defense of sovereignty, and a balanced relationship with all countries, without yielding to pressure or interests from foreign powers.
