Dom Rep: Cuban residents reject expulsion of diplomats

Santo Domingo, Aug 16 (Prensa Latina) The "Maximo Gomez" Association of Cuban Residents in the Dominican Republic decried the Dominican government's decision to expel 10 members of the Cuban Embassy in Santo Domingo, including their families.

The Association endorsed the statement issued by the Cuban Foreign Ministry (MINREX), which rejects this action as unjustified and denounces its true political background.

The organization considered that the measure is a response to external pressures aimed at damaging relations between the two countries and reproduced excerpts from the Cuban statement, which cites precedents such as the island’s exclusion from the Summit of the Americas, the Dominican Republic’s change of vote at the United Nations regarding the US blockade, and now the withdrawal of diplomats.

The group pointed out that the ties between the two peoples cannot be broken by political measures and stressed that the two nations share a common history, forged in the struggles for independence.

It stated, “We are Cuban residents in the Dominican Republic. We respect its laws, we love its people, and we contribute to the development of this nation that has opened its doors to us.”

The Association called on Dominican society and the peoples of the Caribbean, as well as social, cultural, and community organizations, churches, human rights organizations, universities and think tanks, in addition to democratic and solidarity sectors, to reject the expulsion and demand the Dominican government to reverse its stance.
