Panama records over 5,000 dengue cases; children make up the majority

Panama City, Aug 17 (Prensa Latina) So far this year, Panama has recorded 5,318 cases of dengue, with the highest incidence among the underage population, according to a report released today by the Ministry of Health (Minsa).

The report indicates a national incidence rate of 115 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, although the disease affects all age groups.

The 10-to-14 age group shows the highest incidence—167 cases per 100,000 inhabitants—making it the most vulnerable population segment during the current season.

To date, health authorities have recorded 628 hospitalizations and 16 deaths associated with dengue. Bocas del Toro and Los Santos account for the highest number of fatalities, with three in each province, while the Metropolitan Region, Colon, and Chiriqui have each reported two deaths.

The Metropolitan Region also leads in the number of infections with 1,490 cases, followed by Colon with 1,188 and Panama West with 508.

Notable among the *corregimientos* (districts/subdivisions) with the highest incidence are Veracruz (562 cases), Puerto Pilon (269), and Tocumen (234).

Minsa continues vector control operations and health promotion campaigns aimed primarily at eliminating breeding sites for the *Aedes aegypti* mosquito—the dengue vector—both inside and around homes.

Health authorities emphasized the need to maintain preventive measures, despite the downward trend in cases observed over recent weeks.
