Criticism of US policy at Pan-American Congress in Montevideo

Montevideo, Aug 22 (Prensa Latina) The Third Pan-American Congress—a forum bringing together over 150 parliamentarians and progressive political figures—opened in the Uruguayan capital with a call for an alternative vision to the hegemonic doctrine of the United States.

US economist David Adler, a general coordinator of the Progressive International, told the press that the call is to “build an alternative vision” to the US Monroe Doctrine, based on “cooperation, sovereign equality, mutual understanding, and fraternity.”

For his part, US Representative Jesus “Chuy” Garcia stated that the meeting comes at a time of “grave danger” for the hemisphere and the world.

He denounced the Donald Trump administration for upholding a “long history in Latin America of undermining sovereignty and democracy, massacring civilians, and stealing natural resources.”

He maintained that his country’s delegation to the forum aims to represent what he described as a “growing” movement rejecting “corruption, oligarchy, and authoritarianism,” both within and outside the United States.

Brazilian Senator Humberto Costa pointed to clear evidence of attempts to interfere in his country’s October elections.

He added that maintaining trade relations with Washington is difficult when paying tariffs of 45 to 50 percent on products.

The planned discussions are organized around four thematic pillars: peace, security, and multilateralism; sustainable economic development and regional integration; digital sovereignty and artificial intelligence; and well-being and care for the majority.
