The remarks were made at a gathering at the *Casa del Pueblo* (House of the People)—headquarters of the Socialist Party of Uruguay —where grassroots activists from the Broad Front (*Frente Amplio*) honored the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution on the anniversary of his birth.
“He taught us to look to history—to our roots—for the reasons to resist the intensified blockade that is killing people on the island,” he noted. He highlighted how Fidel transformed the legacy of Jose Marti into the very essence of Cuban national identity, principles, and traditions—including the internationalism and solidarity that Cuba both practices and receives today.
Earlier, representing the Anti-Fascist International, Gerardo Suarez outlined the global situation, characterized by the structural crisis of capitalism and its aggressive imperial actions.
He emphasized that the US superpower had proven defeatable on the military front by Iran, while economically, China is surging ahead through industrial and technological growth.
“They are coming for the oil, lithium, copper, and water—for our natural resources—and they want to seize them by force, just as they did against Venezuela on January 3rd,” he said.
He also pointed to the genocidal blockade against Cuba, noting that they seek to extinguish the island’s example of defiance by inflicting deprivation upon its people.
