Ecuadorian Minister reports on operation at extortion center

Quito, Aug 22 (Prensa Latina) Ecuadorian Interior Minister John Reimberg reported the dismantling in Quito of an alleged clandestine call center that reportedly used personal data to extort debtors in Mexico, Colombia, Peru, and Chile.

According to the investigation, the facility operated under the guise of the Ecuadorian company Latameris Support S.A.S. and employed dozens of young people as purported debt collection agents.

Reimberg stated that communications detected at the site targeted not only victims in Ecuador but also individuals in other countries.

“It is a large center equipped with technology; it was aimed at undermining the security of Ecuador and other countries,” the minister maintained during a press conference.

Reimberg questioned the Prosecutor’s Office’s decision to charge only 10 people, noting that officers found approximately 112 individuals on the premises, several of whom were aware of the activities taking place there.

The case unfolds as Ecuador grapples with a security crisis; according to authorities, criminal organizations have expanded their activities beyond drug trafficking into crimes such as extortion, kidnapping, and illegal mining.
