Over 92,000 Nicaraguans participated in constitutional consultation

Managua, Aug 23 (Prensa Latina) A total of 92,832 people from 25 sectors have participated in the consultation process regarding partial reforms to the Political Constitution of Nicaragua, reported Gustavo Porras, President of the National Assembly (Parliament).

The legislator explained that representatives from sectors such as sports, health, culture, Christian churches, indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples, municipal and regional governments, artists, musicians, media professionals, free trade zone workers, and members of the military and police forces have participated in the meetings, both in person and virtually.

He highlighted that the consultation process is being conducted under the principles of peace, security, and stability, and stated that the proposal has been presented to various sectors of Nicaraguan society.

The National Assembly President maintained that the partial reforms seek to establish a constitutional framework that preserves the social gains achieved during the Revolution and prevents a return to neoliberal policies.

In this context, Porras recalled the events of 2018 and asserted that those who promoted the attempted coup d’état intended—in his words—to reverse social progress and privatize services such as education, healthcare, and roads.

V“Why do they want to return? To turn education into a business, to turn healthcare into a business, to privatize everything—even the roads; they want to return to drag us back into neoliberal darkness,” he stated during his remarks.
