Brazil launches national blood donation campaign

Brasilia, Aug 25 (Prensa Latina) Brazil is moving towards officially incorporating Red June into its national calendar, following the approval of an initiative aimed at encouraging voluntary blood donations.

Approved by the Senate’s Social Affairs Committee, Bill 205/2022 establishes the Red June public health campaign, dedicated each sixth month of the year to promoting awareness and encouraging donations.

The proposal has been sent to the President of the Republic for approval, with a deadline of August 28.

It includes the development and distribution of educational materials, awareness activities, and the illumination of public buildings in red during the campaign period.

It also seeks to reinforce a practice considered fundamental to the functioning of the public health network, since the supply of blood for transfusions depends exclusively on voluntary donations.

According to data from the Ministry of Health cited by the Senate, in 2023 approximately 1,6% of the Brazilian population donated blood through the Unified Health System (SUS), with the collection of 3.2 million bags.

The World Health Organization recommends that countries maintain between one and three percent of their population as blood donors.

This initiative also aims to contribute to the regularity of donations, especially during periods when blood banks face reduced reserves.
