The operation was carried out after several months of investigation by the Operational Area of the National Police’s Penitentiary Investigation and Analysis Unit.
In Unit Four of the former Comcar prison, 14.894 kilograms of cocaine base, 2.32 kilograms of marijuana, and 353 grams of cocaine were seized, enough for approximately 23,500 doses of narcotics.
In addition, 38 cell phones, 10 TV boxes (which convert into smart screens), and 13 routers were confiscated.
The value of the seized drugs was estimated at $300,000. The raid involved intelligence work on criminal organizations operating inside and outside prisons.
Several prosecutorial procedures remain pending, such as the analysis of security camera footage and reports from the Scientific Police.
Unit Four of the Santiago Vazquez prison, historically known as the former Comcar, is the largest penitentiary in Uruguay, located in the department of Montevideo.
It houses approximately one-third of the country’s prison population.
