Public space inaugurated in Brazil against femicide

Brasilia, Aug 26 (Prensa Latina) The Brazilian city of Buzios inaugurated a Red Bench in memory of femicide victims, an initiative that seeks to strengthen the prevention of and fight on violence against women.

This initiative took place in Plaza dos Huesos (Bones Square), in the Lakes region of Rio de Janeiro state, as part of the “Buzios for Them” initiative, boosted by the Municipal Secretariat for Women.

Through this action, as reported by Agencia Brasil, the aim is to bring the territorial protection network closer to the population and expand women’s access to information about services, guidance, and support.

Furthermore, it seeks to transform the public space into a point of awareness about the need to prevent femicides.

The site chosen for the Red Bench also has strong historical significance, as it is linked to the murder of Angela Diniz almost five decades ago.

Known as the Panther of Minas Gerais, Diniz was shot and killed on December 30, 1976, by her partner, Raul Fernando do Amaral Street, at her summer home.

The crime happened after an argument related to the end of their relationship, and the killer shot the 32-year-old woman four times.

The tragedy shocked Brazil and became one of the emblematic cases in the public debate on gender violence and the murders of women.
