Brazilian population reaches 214.2 million inhabitants

Brasilia, Aug 29 (Prensa Latina) Brazil reached a population of 214.2 million inhabitants in 2026, with a growth rate of 0.37 percent—lower than that recorded during the previous period—according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

According to the agency’s estimates, based on data from July 1, the Brazilian population grew at a slower pace than the 0.39 percent recorded in 2024 and 2025, confirming a trend of demographic slowdown.

This trend varies across the country’s federal units; Roraima, Santa Catarina, and Mato Grosso posted the highest growth rates, with expansion exceeding one percent.

At the opposite side were Rio de Janeiro, Alagoas, and Rio Grande do Sul.

The estimates also revealed a high concentration of inhabitants in large cities: the 27 state capitals are home to 49.4 million people, representing 23.1 percent of the South American giant’s total population.

Sao Paulo remains as. the most populous municipality, with 11,911,337 inhabitants, followed by Rio de Janeiro (6,731,133) and Brasilia (3,009,996).

The IBGE identified 15 municipalities with more than one million inhabitants, accounting for approximately 20 percent of the Brazilian population—about 42.9 million people.

Previous analyses point that Brazil’s population will peak around 2041 at approximately 220.4 million inhabitants before beginning a downward trend.
