Local food system project expanded in eastern Cuba

Holguin, Cuba, Aug 29 (Prensa Latina) The World Food Programme (WFP) is expanding the second stage of the "Actua Diferente!" (Act Differently!) project into the municipality of Rafael Freyre, Holguin province; the initiative aims to strengthen local food systems in eastern Cuba.

The initiative, sponsored by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), also covers the municipalities of Yateras, Rio Cauto, Songo-La Maya, and Jesus Menendez. The plan seeks to meet the nutritional needs of social safety net facilities such as daycare centers, nursing homes, and maternity homes.

Luis Placido Ortega, a WFP official in Cuba, reported that the organization supports producers by providing inputs, equipment, and technical training.

This support aims to ensure that supplies come directly from the agricultural areas within the beneficiary municipalities themselves.

Ortega noted that the project assists local authorities in building capacity and developing tools for supply management.

He also emphasized that the core focus of these efforts is to strengthen the resilience of agricultural systems in the face of economic challenges and climate change.

During this phase, agricultural cooperatives were linked with relevant social institutions, and tailored capacity-building plans were designed.

The initial stage of “Actua Diferente!”, implemented over five years in five other eastern municipalities, benefited 52 social welfare entities and thousands of people.
