Nicaragua: Mechnikov Institute consolidates vaccine production

Managua, Sep 1 (Prensa Latina) The Mechnikov Institute, a biotechnology plant established through cooperation with Russia, is now operating in Nicaragua to produce vaccines and is seeking to expand its capacity to meet the needs of Nicaraguan healthcare and international markets.

Roberto Lopez, president of the Nicaraguan Social Security Institute (INSS), told Revista Vision Sandinista that the plant aims to help guarantee the population’s access to vaccines while maintaining costs that ensure its sustainability.

An article released in the magazine’s latest issue stated that the biotechnology plant has produced eight million vaccines destined for Nicaragua this year. In 2025 alone, it produced 2.1 million doses of injectable vaccines.

The institute has exported vaccines to Cuba, Venezuela, and Ecuador, while exploring opportunities to expand its presence in other markets, including Mexico.

The facility also expanded its production lines this year, manufactured 4.5 million doses of Convasell to fight Covid-19, and serves as a platform for incorporating vaccines from other countries.

Russian and Nicaraguan authorities are reportedly studying the possibility of packaging the HPV vaccine in this nation and producing a dengue vaccine that could be available by 2029.
