Senator Omar Aziz, rapporteur for Constitutional Amendment Proposal (PEC 221/2019), affirmed on Tuesday that there is a “good expectation” that the text will be approved this Wednesday by the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) of the Upper House.
Aziz indicated that, if the group approves it, the intention is to request a special schedule to bring the proposal immediately to the Senate’s plenary session.
This mechanism would expedite the process and allow the PEC to be voted on in two rounds during the same session.
The PEC rapporteur stated that if a senator requests additional time to analyze the proposal, he will seek to reduce that period to a few hours, and confirmed that he will maintain the text approved in May by the Chamber of Deputies without changes.
The proposal establishes the elimination of the 6×1 work schedule, in which workers work six days on and one day off, and includes reducing the workweek from the current 44 to 40 hours, without wage reduction.
Aziz said the measure would benefit some 37 million Brazilians, including around 20 million women, many of whom also bear the burden of domestic and care work.
