The caucus announced it would request the appearance of Julio Landron, Executive Director of the National Health Service (SNS), before the Chamber of Deputies’ Standing Committee on Health to explain the situation at the facility.
Legislator Ydenia Done questioned the maintenance and hygiene conditions in public hospitals, as well as sterilization processes, water quality, and infection prevention and control mechanisms.
Done also demanded information on the frequency of microbiological testing in maternity wards, operating rooms, intensive care units, hemodialysis areas, and other hospital services considered high-risk.
In the deputy’s view, the events at the Nuestra Senora de la Altagracia Maternity Hospital could reveal broader issues regarding oversight and service quality within the public hospital network.
According to *La Vanguardia*, the PLD’s official publication, the legislator noted that a similar situation occurred in 2023, when the deaths of 72 newborns were reported at the San Lorenzo de Los Mina Maternity Hospital during the first quarter of that year.
On August 27, the SNS reported that, following an intervention at the facility, it had confirmed 17 neonatal deaths between the 1st and 24th of that month.
In a statement, the agency specified that only three of the deceased newborns tested positive for microorganisms, and these cases involved extremely premature infants.
