September 9 marks the anniversary of the historic 1999 Sirte Declaration, when African leaders took the decisive step toward creating the AU, replacing the Organization of African Unity, as an instrument to accelerate continental integration and strengthen Africa’s voice on the global stage.
The AUC chief noted that the observance comes this year at a particularly significant moment for Africa.
Just a few days ago, he remembered, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) endorsed an African-led initiative, boosting the use of a world map that more accurately reflects the continent’s true size.
The initiative, spearheaded by Togo with the support of the AU, represents more than a simple cartographic adjustment; a reminder of how Africa is perceived is significant, and the continent must play an increasing role in shaping the narratives through which it is viewed.
Youssouf added that the AU’s Agenda 2063 remains the fundamental roadmap for building an integrated, prosperous, and peaceful Africa.
