The Foreign Minister was responding to a report by journalist Gabriel Pereyra on Radio Sarandi regarding a warning from Washington that Uruguay could be placed on a “blacklist” of countries that “hire slave labor.”
This serves as a pretext for Washington to pressure third countries that receive medical collaboration from the Caribbean island.
According to the report, this could mean the White House might suspend military aid to the South American nation.
When asked about the matter, Lubetkin stated that “no official communication from the United States regarding this specific issue” had been received, although he acknowledged that “this is one of many topics we are discussing.”
He emphasized that the experience with Cuban ophthalmologists in Uruguay has been extraordinary.
“They have restored sight to many, many people, regardless of any political or ideological connotations,” he remarked.
“We value positive experiences and intend to preserve them, within a framework of agreement and dialogue with all stakeholders and our partner countries—so that everyone is comfortable,” the Foreign Minister noted.
