UNHRC condemns US interference in Cuba’s domestic affairs

Geneva, Switzerland, Sept. 9 (Prensa Latina) The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) received a complaint regarding the brutal economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba.

A report presented by a UNHRC special rapporteur denounces that the revocation of visas for diplomats from third countries and their family members—and/or threats to revoke them in the future for entering into agreements to deploy Cuban doctors—constitutes a US interference in Cuba’s domestic affairs.

The international body noted that measures adopted to prevent Cuba from participating in and benefiting from international financial institutions aim to exclude the island from international cooperation.

The report presented by Special Rapporteur Zaina Jallad denounces that US restrictive measures are causing a documented increase in mortality in the Caribbean nation.

In this regard, it cites the US refusal to allow producers of medicines, raw materials, medical and agricultural equipment, spare parts, software, vaccines for humans and livestock, fertilizers, and other essential goods to enter into contracts with Cuba.

The official document notes that the refusal of banks to process transactions and of transport companies to guarantee deliveries to the island has the same consequence.

The UNHRC calls on the United States to lift all restrictions hindering the supply of essential goods to the Caribbean nation—including food, medicines, and items for maintenance and social development—which have “especially devastating effects on vulnerable groups.”
