Papuashvili told on national television, “Brussels is currently leading the EU toward a civilizational abyss, and within the EU, the admission of new members who will not enjoy equal rights is under debate.”
The parliamentary leader noted that all indications suggest they intend to propose a two-tiered EU membership to candidate countries: those in the top category, the EU “aristocrats,” so to speak, and lesser members, the new EU member states.
The lawmaker emphasized that the European Commission, led by Germany’s Ursula von der Leyen, is distorting and moving away from the EU’s fundamental values.
Georgia has been an EU candidate country since December 2023.
Relations between Tbilisi and Brussels deteriorated after the Georgian Parliament passed the “foreign agents” law in May 2024, aimed at curbing foreign influence in the country’s internal affairs.
