Cuba to discuss non-communicable diseases

Havana, Sept 18 (Prensa Latina) Cuba will host the 1st International Symposium on Non-Communicable Diseases and Their Risk Factors: Challenges and Issues, to be held on November 12 and 13 in Havana.

Taking place at the Cabaret Tropicana Convention Center, the gathering will bring together domestic and international specialists to discuss strategies for addressing non-communicable diseases—the leading causes of global morbidity and mortality and a direct obstacle to achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Under the theme “For an integrative, health-oriented, and social vision,” the symposium will address cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory conditions, diabetes, mental disorders, aging, obesity, and hypertension, Dr. Luis Alberto Ochoa Montes—of the “Hermanos Ameijeiras” Clinical-Surgical Teaching Hospital—told Prensa Latina.

The program includes keynote lectures, specialized talks, and scientific panels. Specialists from Cuba, Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico, and Sri Lanka will participate, confirmed Dr. Ochoa, who also chairs the Sudden Death Research Group (Gimus).

A highlight of the event is a session on gender, aging, and non-communicable diseases, organized in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

The event is organized by Gimus, the “Hermanos Ameijeiras” Hospital, the Virtual Convention Center, Cabaret Tropicana, and the Palmares Extra-Hotel Group.

It is sponsored by the Cuban Ministry of Public Health and other institutions, including the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and World Health Organization (WHO) offices on the island, and the UNFPA, among others.

The Organizing Committee has invited general practitioners, geneticists, internists, cardiologists, nephrologists, pediatricians, geriatricians, pathologists, neurologists, public health specialists, pulmonologists, endocrinologists, and other specialists to participate in this forum for scientific exchange.
