Cited by the Syrian press during a Security Council session dedicated to the situation in Syria, Al-Albi asserted that Damascus chose to open the door to mediation with the aim of avoiding new crises in the region.
“We wish to move toward diplomatic solutions and a security agreement under United States auspices,” the diplomat said, maintaining that this position had been demonstrated “through deeds, not just words.”
However, he stressed that opening negotiations “does not in any way mean accepting the occupation or yielding on our people’s rights.”
Al-Albi also denounced Israeli military operations in Syrian territory, stating that forces from that country had entered villages, caused displacements, and attacked facilities.
The Syrian representative described Israel as “the greatest threat to the security and stability of the entire region, not just Syria,” and questioned recent incursions by Israeli officials into Syrian territory.
Syria further maintains that the Golan Heights—occupied by Israel since 1967—are part of its territory and has reiterated that security talks do not imply renouncing its rights over that region.
